With the development of the times and the society, the deepeninginternational communication leads to a more frequent and deeper level oflanguage contact. Nowadays, in order to enhance the applicability and tokeep up with the pace of world development, Indonesian language almostexclusively borrows various kinds of vocabularies from the modernculture--English.There are many reasons that the Indonesian borrows so manyvocabularies from English. Two of the main reasons are that theIndonesian language has large vocabulary vacancies and the Englishlanguage is so prestigious. The more widespread used of English inIndonesian society, the higher degree of people’s familiarity with English.It will be easier that English influences all aspects of the Indonesianlanguage system. The increasing fame of English has also caused anegative effect on the status of Indonesian.This thesis studies the role and influences of the English on thedevelopment of the Indonesian language under the guidance ofsociolinguistics, language contact and language borrowed theories.Research methods used in this thesis are: investigation, description,analysis, combining with cultural linguistics and other disciplines. By aconnecting study of the history of the the Indonesian and English, thecurrent situation of English borrowings and the assimilation process, thisthesis provides references for the study of the Indonesian from a newperspective so as to have a further understanding about the Indonesianlanguage and its cultural connotations.
