On The Mass Uprising In Hubei Province In The Decade Before The Revolution Of1911

The mass uprisings were among the most acute social problems in the late qing dynasty, and much studies have been done on this issue, yet as to studies from the approach of regional history, more effort is still in need to shed light on this topic. In view of this, a multi-disciplinary study which includes history, sociology, journalism and statistics has been done here, for a further consideration in this sphere.The main focus of this thesis is on the patterns and features behind the uprisings, the interaction among different groups as well as the current of public opinion before and after the uprisings. Macro-study combined with case-study has been employed, aiming to get to the bottom of the mass uprisings in Hubei during the10years before the outbreak of the1911revolution. The mass uprisings in hubei province bore some resemblance to those of other provinces, however, the former stood out with striking characters of its own territoriality, In the second place, the analysis of the connection between the public opinion and the uprising shows that the current of the mass media, to some extent, triggered the the mass uprising.The mass uprisings in the late qing dynasty bore the same character with those throughout the Chinese history, yet some new features were stamped onto them in a society of great transformation and sharp turning. A consensus among the scholars is that the mass uprisings in the late qing dynasty was a prelude to the1911revolution, however, the author hold this to be reasonable that the importance of the "mass uprising" should not be overrated, and a more unbiased point of view should be held in the assessment of the relationship between the "mass uprising" and1911revolution.
