The mass uprising was one of the most serious social problems in the decade before the Revolution of 1911.Up to now, academic circles have been calling for the more systematical research into the popular revolt in Jiangsu Province of the same decade. To answer the call, this dissertation endeavors to cast a thorough probe on the issue with the relevant theories of history, sociology, social psychology, statistics and so on.This paper gives a detailed analysis of the Jiangsu's mass uprising from the perspectives of its general state, characteristics, reasons, influence and the Qing government's counter-measures. It sketches an outline of the Jiangsu's mass uprising, summarizes its characteristics of extensiveness, backwardness and differences between the southern and northern areas, and analyses its reasons of inappropriate practice of the policy of the "draining-the-pond-to-get-all-the-fish" and the New Deal of the Late Qing Dynasty, of the frequently-visited natural calamities, and of the inner drive of the peasants' colonial psychology, etc. Although the Qing government took various counter-measures to prevent the worse, the outcomes seemed far from satisfaction: The mass uprising, like a raging fire, held up the development of economy, the smooth implementation of the New Deal, and the progress of the Revolution of 1911 in Jiangsu. It could be concluded that the Jiangsu's mass uprising was nothing but a miniature of the whole unruly society in the ten years before the Revolution of 1911.
