Note is a common style of ancient Chinese literature. The Han Dynasty is its rudimentarystage. It originated from the Wei Jin Southern and Northern Dynasty, and developed in Tang andSong Dynasty. Note reached its peak of popularity in Qing Dynasty. Every kinds of notedeveloped in Qing Dynasty on the basis of the previous generation. A large number of notesappeared in Qing Dynasty and most of them have superior values on the research of History andLinguistics. And because the Qing Dynasty was not so long ago, most of the literati’s notes havebeen preserved. Historical note is one of the important kinds. The historical notes involves many kinds of things which can display the ancient social life, for example, anecdotes, historical facts, customs, sceneries, literature and art. And these contentsalso have great values on the research of Linguistics. The exegesis of the note refers to the exegesis preserved in the ancient notes. Scattering inmany books is a most obvious characteristic. Some scholars have paid close attention to theexegesis of the historical note of Qing Dynasty, but none of them have went deep into the study. So in this thesis, we sort out the materials about exegesis in historical notes of Qing Dynasty, analyze them and summarize their characteristics and deficiencies. Also we analyze and discussthe interpretations of some words to supplement The Chinese Dictionary. This thesis is divided intofive parts:The introduction part mainly introduces the definition of note, and summarizes thecharacteristics of the exegesis in notes, the particularities about the historical notes of the QingDynasty, then analyzes the current situation of the historical notes of the Qing Dynasty on thebasis of collecting materials. The first chapter divides this chapter into denoting word, discerning punctuation, phoneticnotation, distinguishing character, explaining sentence, syntactic analysis, illustrating rhetoric, and demonstrating reference, etc. The significant part of this chapter is denoting word. The second chapter shows the values on compiling a dictionary. Scholars of the ChineseDictionary used many materials in the notes to explain words. But still a large number ofmaterials had been ignored. So we make a contrast between the Chinese Dictionary and thehistorical notes of Qing Dynasty, which could display and supplement The Chinese Dictionary. The third chapter summarizes the characteristics about exegesis of historical notes of QingDynasty from the gloss terms, methods and contents: In the use of the gloss terms,we could find almost every frequently-used term in historicalnotes of Qing Dynasty, but the frequency of the use varies greatly. In the use of the gloss methods, we analyze from two parts:seeking meaning andparaphrasing method. In historical notes of Qing Dynasty, the seeking meaning method is mostlyinvisible and scientific. The writers usually believed what they could see. Moreover the writersused various methods to paraphrase. In historical notes of Qing Dynasty, the writers were accustomed to paraphrase in the textof notes, and only used a small amount of annotation. Most of the materials we collect aredenoting word. The historical notes of Qing Dynasty attach importance to summarize, and thelanguage they used is popular and easy to understand. Also we analyze mistakes in denoting word, phonetic notation and quoting literature.Note is a very important type of literature in ancient China. The historical note of QingDynasty also has great values on the research of Linguistics. I wish more scholars will realize theimportance of note from this thesis, and do more study on the historical note of Qing Dynasty.
