A Corpus-based Study On The Validity Of C-E Translation Of Government Work Report

Government Work Report is an annual summary of the past, planning for the future release of the major policies. GWR belongs to political documents with the contents involved economy, politics, diplomacy, etc. With China’s status in the international communication increasingly growing, the C-E translation of GWR attracts more and more attention all over the world, In the past decade, a lot of experience in the C-E translation of GWR has been accumulated in the practice.This paper reviews a variety of studies in recent years on the C-E translation of GWR. They are partly about the problems on the words, sentences translation, or some arguments based on some theory or theories to enhance the skills of English translation.In this paper, the research takes Chinese and English versions of GWR from2007to2012and State of Union Address from2007to2011as basic texts, using corpora to analyze the characteristics from parts of speech, high-frequency words and their collocations, and sentence length. With the help of the three translation theories:"Textual Analysis","Skopos" theory, and "Domesticating and Foreignizing", the research makes a detailed and complete study to the whole process of translation. Combining the translation theories with the statistics got from the corpora, the research comes to the final conclusion:(1)According to the objective statistics from parts of speech, sentence length, together with the theory of "Textual Analysis", the text of GWR is defined as an expressive and informative text, whose translation criteria lie in correctness in information transmission.(2) After comparing English version of GWR and SUA, with the standard of "Readers Oriented" theory, the research suggests multi-translation strategies, that is, except that there are78percent of word for word translation, Domesticating and Foreignizing should be mixed together when it comes to some specific contents of Chinese features.Finally, the research presents some suggestions to the translation principles and strategies to prepare for the future research in this field under the research question "how to improve the validity to the English translation of GWR".
