On English Translation Of Report On The Work Of The Government In2010

With rapid economic development and an increasingly important role in world affairs,foreigners become more anxious to learn about China’s policies. The Report on the Work ofthe Government, owing to its extensive coverage of China’s social, economic and culturaldevelopment and future planning, provides them with an effective channel to learn aboutChina. Thus, the translation of the report has become increasingly important.This thesis will, on the basis of Skopos theory, analyze the translation of2010Report onthe Work of the Government. First, Skopos theory, a branch of German functionalist school,including its origin and principles, will be introduced, before detailed analysis of the reporttext. As an authoritative state document, the report has some unique characteristics not to bediscovered in other types of text.. On the basis of adequate analysis of its linguistic features,this thesis will within the framework of Skopos theory, analyze the report at lexical, syntacticand stylistic levels.The thesis is made up of introduction,three chapters and conclusion.Chapter one introduces Skopos theory and relative theories.Chapter two illustrateslinguistic features—lexical features,syntactic features,stylistic features,together with thefunction and typoligical analysis of Report on the Work of the Government. Chapter threeanalyzes the principle of loyalty and general strategies, with special attention paid to theguidance of Skopos theory to translation strategies. By a detailed case study of the translationof2010report, this thesis aims to help translators and translation learners better understandand command application of Skopos-theory to translation practice, and enable them toeffectively apply the theory to translation of similar texts.
