Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is the essence of the Chinese nation and an indispensable part of the world medicine. To popularize Chinese medicine culture and promote the integration and development of the world medicine, translators and physicians have done a lot of practices and researches in TCM English translation. In this thesis, the author first describes the development of TCM English translation. And then the characteristics of the Chinese medicine language are discussed, followed by the discussion of the existing translating methods of TCM and the status of TCM English translation, including the achievements and limitations. Later, the author introduces the theory of eco-translatology and some of its core terms as well as its application in translation. Through detailed analysis of the theory and some main factors concerning TCM English translation, the author suggests applying eco-translatology to TCM English translation and provides some principles.Therefore, this study attempts to study TCM English translation from the perspective of eco-translatology, which can help translators integrate all the concerning factors into a whole system, such as source language, source text, translator, target language, culture, target reader, communication objective and environment, to provide a systemic translating method and some related translating principles for TCM English translation. By this way, it can improve translation quality, promote the spread of TCM and make contributions to the world medical development.The thesis is divided into six chapters.In the first chapter, the author introduces some background information of the study and its objective, significance as well as the structure of the thesis; the second chapter is about literature review, which looks back some previous studies on TCM English translation thus to explain the flexibility and necessity of conducting the study; Chapter Three mainly talks about the characteristics of TCM language system and the problems they bring up in translation and Chapter Four is about the application of eco-translatology to TCM English translation practice. In this chapter, the author introduces the main terms and explains their applications in TCM English translation practice. In Chapter Five, some principles are provided when translating TCM from eco-translatologic perspective. Chapter Six is the conclusion of this thesis with implications, limitations of this study and suggestions for further study being given.
