Study On The Space Pattern-Making In Dunhuang Murals

This article starts with pattern-making of caisson ceiling. It treats the features of space pattern-making as the breakthrough point, and combines with the interrelationship of the architecture murals and sculptures, the field investigation and some relative literature data in order to analyze and study the characteristics of Dunhuang murals’ pattern-making, space structure, form composition, and the usage of this space idea in modern mural design. This article revel the unique space structure features of Dunhuang murals. Dunhuang murals were built during the time from Beiliang of Sixteen Countries to Meng Yuan era. The existing fifty thousand square meters of Dunhuang grotto fresco is one of the cultural art heritages which was kept relatively completely in the same kind of temple murals. Nowadays, the special studies on Dunhuang paintings’space pattern-making are limited, so the completion of this article has some academic valve, but still has difficulties.In the analysis of this article, it stats that there are three features of murals: different murals’formation depends on different building type, self-sufficiency, and decoration. Dunhuang murals first limited to the specific architectural space. In order to maintain the rationality of murals attachment to the wall structure and the integrity of visual space on building, the paintings of Dunhuang almost treat the architectural pattern-making as the lead, and obey the varieties on pattern-making and structure. However, under the strong promotion of the religious worship, Dunhuang murals not only depends on architecture but also has its own relatively dependence, it integrates the architecture to service for Buddhist, It created the path which can make the inner space beyond its original limited space. It uses the composition of form, rationality of layout, and the endless imagination to make up for the deficiency of the space, then, the Dunhuang Cave has more self-sufficiency and liberalization. This feature is the key which can make Dunhuang murals different from the others in general. This feature is also the basic reason why Dunhuang caves are so important in the world.There are four chapters in this article, Chapter one is talking about the history of caisson ceiling; it says that the pattern of the ceiling in Dunhuang Caves decided the type, layout and the form of the paintings. The structure of painting is changing by the pattern of the building. This analysis leads out the discussion of the next chapter. Chapter two is the key one in this article, which discusses the features of Dunhuang Caves’ space pattern and structures from the vision of the caves, the art of aesthetic cognition, and the religious aesthetic cognition. Chapter 3 is the artistic analysis of Dunhuang murals’ space form consistence; it analyzes that the different layout organization form and structures method is decided by the different seats and contents of the murals. Chapter4 summarizes the inspiration which space pattern-making of Dunhuang murals gives to the design of modern murals. It includes the space structures that fit to the pattern construction of function and the cognition of murals’design.
