In recent years, with the prosperous development of Chinese tourism, an increasing number of foreign tourists show great interests to Chinese culture. The culture-themed tourism is especially prevailing with growing heat. As a cultural industry, tourism is also one of the most important supporting forces in improving Chinese cultural soft power, and plays a significant role in publicizing tourist spots towards foreigners, attracting tourists’interests and disseminating Chinese culture. Thus, the translation of tourist material arouses increasing attention from scholars in the field of translation. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Shaolin Temple, known as the "origin of Chan sect and Shaolin Kungfu", gains world-wide international influence. Therefore, the translation of its tourist material is of great importance. However, few studies on the translation of Shaolin Temple tourist material from the perspective of Skopostheorie have been made.Skopostheorie proposes that translation is a kind of purposeful cross-cultural interaction rather than the word-for-word linguistic switching. The skopos of a translation determines its strategies or techniques. The translational action takes place in a certain cultural situation and is determined by the intended functions and purposes of the target text. The translator should make the target text skopos-oriented and achieve the intended functions of the target text to the utmost degree. This thesis will make a detailed analysis of the translation of Shaolin Temple tourist material based on the Skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule of Skopostheorie, and explore whether its translation conforms to Skopostheorie. Through the analysis, the author concludes that its translation conforms to Skopostheorie and also summarizes the translation principles and techniques adopted by the translators in the process of translation. This thesis is composed of six parts. The introduction part briefly describes the research background, research purposes, research questions, research significance and research methodology. The first chapter is literature review. Based on the previous studies, the author points out the weaknesses of previous studies and also stresses the necessity of the present study. The second chapter is theoretical framework. The author briefly reviews the background of Skopostheorie, and then lays emphasis on the elaboration of its main concepts and its three rules. The third chapter is the detailed analysis. In this chapter, the author systematically analyzes the Skopos of C-E translation of Shaolin Temple tourist material, and then makes a detailed analysis of the translation of Shaolin Temple tourist material based on the Skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule.In Chapter Four, the target-addressees-oriented and culture-oriented translation principles and concrete techniques adopted by the translator are summarized based on the analysis of C-E translation of Shaolin Temple tourist material from the perspective of Skopostheorie. The last part of the thesis is the conclusion. The study proves that the C-E translation of Shaolin Temple tourist material conforms to Skopostheoire. The translation principles and techniques adopted by translators are also summarized in the study. Meanwhile, the study extends the application scope of Skopostheoire and also provides references for further studies. Then the author points out the research limitations. Suggestions for future study are also briefly made.
