Sports, as an important sign of modern civilization, plays an indispensable role inpeople’s social and cultural lives, with the gradual booming of the sports industry inthe domestic and international arena and a growing amount of communication withinthe sports circle, sports English is no longer a concept but an influential subject. Forthose non-native English reporters and learners working in this trade, a fair master ofsports English is now a serious enough factor that will influence the overalldevelopment of this field. Whether they have mastered the related terms andexpressions and have been acquainted with the certain characteristics on the lexicallevel, graph logical level, syntactic level and textual level will influence directly thequality of the sports news report in our country and extend the audience in ourcountry to enjoy the game, and more importantly, whether we will have an effectiveand smooth communication with other counties.Stylistics, as an emerging discipline, has made huge pace of development due tothe effort of a number of linguists. Taking the sports news report from newspaperhome and abroad as corpus, this thesis aims to discover the similarities anddifferences between the two by systematically analyzing and studying the samplesselected so as to provide a proper suggestion for the sports news reporters in ourcountry.Considering different circulation and popularity of different sports news media,the study in this thesis selected China Daily and the football news reports from CSPN as the research data, based on which a mini football news report corpus wasestablished. Besides, a ten pair of sports news reports have been selected fromAmerican newspapers and domestic newspapers with each pair concerning a samesports event from the corpus that the author has built.This thesis consists of five parts. Starting with an overall introduction of thewhole thesis in Chapter 1, this paper ten elaborates on the theories related, making thetheoretical preparation for the following empirical research. The third Chapter is justabout the corpus study and the following part makes a further discussion about thestylistic characteristics of the selected samples. And the last part is the conclusionpart.In all, the significance of this thesis lies in providing a credible reference of thestudy, practice and further honing for English news reporters and learners and finallycontributing to our country’s sports exchange with other countries.
