Adverbs is difficult for international students learning Chinese, let alone the Modality Adverbs. Because the meaning of the Modality Adverbs is always more abstract; the sentence structure including Modality Adverbs is always more flexible; and the tone of the Modality Adverbs is more various. However, as a form of communication, Modality Adverbs play a very important role in our daily life. Therefore, it’s necessary for Chinese learners to grasp this grammatical knowledge. At the same time, we find that there is a gap between the fundamental research of Modality Adverbs and the language research of it, which means that the development of the fundamental research is unequal to the development of language research, and research can’t instruct teaching practice effectively.Therefore, on the purpose of servicing the teaching of Chinese, this thesis generalizes the definition, scope, distribution and pragmatic functions of the Modality Adverbs respectively and sums up the Modality Adverbs in HSK. With the instructional designs of every Modality Adverbs, this thesis attempts to provide some benefits to the teaching of Modality Adverbs.This thesis consists four chapters. The first chapter gives a general overview of the previous research, including comprehensive study and study for teaching Chinese as a foreign language, then explains why this topic is chosen and illustrates the meanings of the study.The second chapter can be divided into two parts.The first part discusses the definition of the Modality Adverbs and its attribution problem. On the basis of that, the definition of Modality Adverbs is brought forth:express the subjective attitude of proposition and has a unfixed position in sentence,used in an adverbial position.The third chapter also includes two parts. The first part, through the application of examples, generalizes the distribution of the modal verbs in different categories and sentence patterns.In the second part, the attention is focused on the pragmatic functions of the Modality Adverbs.Finally,The last chapter instructs an instructional design for each Modality Adverbs, and presents the basic teaching steps.
