In modern Chinese Modality Adverbs is a group of words expressing mood and subjective attitude of an individual, it's essential for Chinese Language and is also one of the emphases on teaching Function words as a Foreign Language. However, with visionary and elusive meanings, Modality Adverbs involve complex and diverse semantic background when used in a syntax environment. Besides, the achievements of fundamental research related to Modality Adverbs are difficult to be used in language teaching practice and can't instruct the teaching effectively. Therefore, the teaching effect of Modality Adverbs is not really ideal. According to these actual state, this paper selected 35 Modality Adverbs from"The Standard for Levels of Chinese Proficiency and the Guidelines for Grammar"(Higher Education Press, in1996), through the language materials, Modality Adverbs were categorized and carried on the sub-item inspection, and then drew a correlation conclusion, in order to provide some benefits to the teaching of Modality Adverbs.This paper is corpus-oriented research, which links the methods of description, induction and comparison with percentage data statistical method. Through filtration, statistic and classification to the language materials, the corresponding conclusion is gained.On the basis of reviewing and summarizing the achievements of Chinese Modality Adverbs studies, Error analysis and teaching analysis of Modality Adverbs, we studied out six inspecting items by taking into consideration some problems, such as content of Chinese courses, teaching key point, teaching difficult point and frequent errors of foreign students etc. The six inspections projects are: 1) Frequency of Modality Adverbs; 2) Position of Modality Adverbs in sentences; 3) Modality Adverbs Collocations with sentence patterns; 4) Modality Adverbs Collocations with Predicates; 5) Some common co-occurrence and collocation of Modality Adverbs with other words; 6) Modal Function of Modality Adverbs.Through the above studies of six items, we obtained the frequency data of 35 Modality Adverbs; the commonly used position in syntax was drawn; it described the collocations with sentence patterns (including Declarative, Interrogative, Imperative and Exclamatory) in Mood, with Predicates (including Adjectives, Verbs, etc.) in semantics and with other words (including Correlative Words, Modal Particles and some useful patterns); the thesis also analyzed the modal function of every Modality Adverb in pragmatics. Based on these results, this paper made instructional designs by listing their backgrounds and semantic frames etc. and finally provided the teaching resources and reference for the Modality Adverbs'teaching.In the synthesis, we thought the thesis based on the language corpus, on the purpose of servicing the teaching of Chinese Function Words, gave a study of 35 Modality Adverbs in syntax, semantics and pragmatics. With the instructional designs of every Modality Adverb, this paper is a beneficial attempt and exploration of Chinese Modality Adverbs'teaching.
