Dunhuang Fresco is a precious treasure in Chinese art history, containing the time-honored culture. The beauty of the frescoes, which is the fruit of generations of painters’ talents and hardworking, is breath-taking. The conception of color was seized gradually, leading to a more profound insight into beauty as well as a comprehensive understanding toward the frescoes’ color and picture. On the basis of these, the unique frescoes with special national characteristics came into being, which reached its peak in the Tang Dynasty, when the social economics and culture underwent a period of prosperity. The Dunhuang Frescoes in Tang Dynasty is a typical representative of it.The conceptions of painting of the painters in the Tang Dynasty has been developed and improved, with the accumulation of rich experience gained during the long-term practice. The advanced conceptions of creation can be detected in the series of magnificent pictures presented to viewers.These paintings with the unique nationality accord with the contemporary ideal of art design, achieving a wonderful integration of the perceptual and the rational as well as a perfect combination of the ancient and the modem. The present research investigates the Dunhuang Frescoes in the Tang Dynasty, from the perspectives of both the color formation in art design and the design principles, attempting to find the similarities. Meanwhile, the thesis points out that the Dunhuang Frescoes with the most distinguishing national features should serve as instruction to the contemporary design in China, and so many aspects in it are worth learning from, which is supposed to equip the Chinese design with uniqueness in the whole world and space of development.
