| The research focused on four parts. First, according to the semantic relationship between Chinese lettered words and standard Chinese words, a classification of Chinese lettered words was introduced. An analysis of usages of Chinese lettered words in newspapers was also made. Second, through research of the awareness of Chinese lettered words, an analysis of the importance of Chinese lettered words to people was conducted. Third, a contrast between Chinese lettered words and English-Chinese mixed language was completed through research of the acceptance of mixed language. Fourth, the causes of the popularity of Chinese lettered words were analyzed.The paper is illustrated by seven chapters. The first chapter is the introduction. A brief explanation about this topic was made.The second chapter introduced the previous research on Chinese lettered words by other scholars.The third chapter is the research on classification of Chinese lettered words. Chinese lettered words were classified by analyzing the semantic relationship between Chinese lettered words and standard Chinese words. A survey of usages of Chinese lettered words from two newspapers, People’s Daily and Yangtze Evening News, was also implemented.The fourth chapter is the research on the awareness of Chinese lettered words. The survey was conducted by interviewing150students and professionals, including20high school students,20Nanjing University undergraduates,20master’s degree candidates,10workers,10people who work in media,10civil servants and60American Students from3Chinese programs. Discussion about the influence of different factors of respondents was also addressed.The fifth chapter details a contrast between Chinese lettered words and English-Chinese mixed language and was completed by researching the acceptance of mixed language.The sixth chapter analyzed the causes of popularity of Chinese lettered words.The seventh chapter is the conclusion and summarizes the entirety of the research and draws certain conclusions. |
