Taiwan Youths Films, Frome Politics To Gender Politics

After reviewing30years’ of development in Taiwan youth films, this thesis has concluded that evolution of the films are cohesive with the development of Taiwan politics and economics. In the80s and90s of last century, youth films reflect seriously towards the society facts, while in the21th century, the films evolved in more commercial and become distant from politics.Among all issues in Taiwan youth films, this thesis choose political identity and gender identity as topics to discuss and expand.In the80s of last century, the youth films could be summarized as a competition between the "Northern Taiwan Spirit" and "Southern Taiwan Spirit". Actually, such phenomenon could be read as a reflection of two political identities crashing together.Another issue this thesis discussed is gender issue. Although the women’s movement and LGBT movement didn’t reach their highest points, the degree of openness of such subjects in Taiwan is still higher than the one in other countries and districts. More importantly, the youth films in21th century provide plenty of materials in such field. Men usually disappeared from youth films, but this didn’t leave enough space to women, due to the research here. Gay films expanded this field, built multiple gender roles, and made the equalness of gender arrive, finally.
