This book is much valueble to study India and Chinese Buddhism,the relations between China and foreign countries in the Tang dynasty, and eventhe ancient history about India and south China sea areas, geography and culture,social life and so on. In1896the Japanese scholar GaoNanShunCiLanginterpreted it into English and printed it in Oxford University. According tomaterials, so far there is only one English veision by GaoNan. The style of hisEnglish version is complete, and the translation is accurate and precise. The biggistcharacteristic of his translation is that he combined study with interpretation.Bisides, the English language is classical and in neat formation. What’s more, thetranslation methods are various. Just because of these advantages, this versioncatched immediately the high attention of the world community of Buddha andcaused a great influence on China and western academic field, promoting thedomestic and overseas scholars to study further the Chinese version. BecauseGaoNan’s translation were done completely in accordance with mordern academicstandard, the book also became a masterpiece to symbolize that JapanneseBuddhism converted from old traditional vatican research into a new mordernscientific one.But GaoNan’s translation was on the basis of a Qing carved version, whichhadn’t been proofread. So some central mistakes is followed down in hisinterpretation. Thus, in his English version, a few mistakes accur, and somecomments are too old to be believed completely.If we evaluate the English version with historical and developing vision, wewill find the translation work has much more advantages than defects. For themerits of the English version, the acadamic study is extremely deficient at home and abroad. This paper is intended to make a full and further study on the Englishversion in language and words angle. My paper first briefly introduce the Englishversion’s influence on western conturies and its own characteristics, then mainlymake a comparative study between the Chinese version and the English one. Allthese work will be done for the sake of examining GaoNan’s translation process inlanguage and content. For example, whether his interpretation is correct or not?how many advantages the version has in meaning in comparative with the original?how the version compensates in the sentence structure? whether it follows theorigial chapters with adding or cutting and so on.The thesis will comparatively study the English version and the original oneby contrasting and thinking word for word to make a further and complete researchon GaoNan’s translation. In view of the length of the chapter is too bigger, it canbe very difficult to completely contrast them. Therefore, this paper will usestatistic method and random sample to make the quality evaluation of the Englishversion.Finally, this thesis will draw a conclusion on the result of the researth onthe English version and the original one with one statistical chart and two stereostatistical figures, making the translation quality of the English version morestrikingand clear.
