There is a great number of “embedding structures” in modern Chinese. Theyare frequently used in people’s daily life, such as “半…半…”、“越来越…”、“照…不误”、“…才怪”. These structures are highly productive and practical. We called themframed chunks in the basis of western chunk theory. Framed chunks is a kind ofChinese lexical chunks, and it is a format which needs to be embedded with otherelements so as to form a new phrase or sentence. It has unique structural, semanticand pragmatic features.Lexical chunks are those fixed expressions in a language. Recently, the studyof lexical chunks has been a hot topic in the field of linguistics. Many researchershave defined lexical chunks from different perspectives. But in Chinese, there’s nodefinite definition yet. The author of this thesis aims scholars to attach moreimportance to Chinese lexical chunks and the related studies. This paper is going to analyze the framed chunks systematically, and try todiscuss the basic characteristics and standard of Chinese lexical chunks.Totally the semantic meaning of the framed chunks can be divided into threetypes—a type of vague semanteme, a type of half-transparent semanteme and atype of transparent semanteme. The semantic transparency of chunks is relatedwith the semantic understanding of chunks. It’s worthful to study on framed chunks which is used frequently in Chinese. The theory about lexical chunks will enrich the study methods and strategies inChinese and help the Chinese learners (as a second language) express themselvesdefinitely.
