The ultimate goal of teaching Chinese as a second language(TCSL) is develop students’ communication compentence. And a large number of people frequently use solidified, semi-solidified language structure in the natural language, so it can be said whether Chinese language learners can express accurately and fluently is closely related to how many the fixed and semi-fixed language forms themselves master, and the language form is called “chunk”. Chunks play important roles in TCSL: they can contribute to the enhancement of the teaching methods and the richness of the teaching of TCSL, help to guide and help the compliation of teaching materials and the design of courses, and also contribute to improve teaching effectiveness.The importances of the chunks gradually attract the attentions and concerns of TCSL educational circle and which also lead to in-depth discussion and study. Previous scholars have done some theoretical researches of Chinese chunks, such as the definition, category and effect of chunks. With the introduction of chunk theory and the deepening of researches, it started to have some studies about the practical teaching, such as the distribution study in spoked language, economic trade written language. But there are some problems, such as it still has disputes about the definition and category of the chunks; there is no research about the combination of chunks and teaching meterials. So it is also a new and urgently needed reseach view. Form this sense, the topic and the purpose of this article has both theorethical and practical value.First of all, on account of the teaching materials is a carrier of the classroom teaching, this paper selected the representative TCSL teaching materials “Developing Chinese”, and made an exhaustive investigation of the chunk in the textbooks. Combined with the senior scholars’ research, this paper proposed the definition and classification during the investigation of teaching materials. And on this basis, this paper has summarized and discussed the chunks itself and researches in TCSL. Then, this paper has investigated the distribution of chunks, compared and analyzed the circumstances of explanations and exercises in “Developing Chinese” series textbooks. At last, according to the problems found in the investigations, this article has tried to put forward some recommendations for the compilation of teaching materials and teaching practice.The preface of this article describes the significance of the topic, research content, purpose, methods and innovations. The first part defined the chunk, and briefly analyzed the current research about chunks in the field of TCSL, and then summed up the weak points and deficiencies the current studies. The second part, from a macro perspective, this paper investigated the distribution of the chunk in “Developing Chinese” series textbooks, then we can find that the chunks distribution in these textbooks is a lack of scientific and systematic, and doesn’t have clear grading standards. Part Ⅲ and Part Ⅳ, from the microscopic perspective, on the one hand, to examine the explanation and translation of the chunks in the textbook; on the other hand, to pay attention to exercises design of the chunks in the textbook. As a result, we found some problems: the explanation of chunks is too simple and the practices is small. In the fifth and final part, this paper has tries to give some suggestions about the selection, explanation, practice design of chunks in the textbooks, and also attempted to propose improvement strategies about the teaching methods.
