Contemporary Chinese oversea translation is an indispensable section of the teaching of Chinese and Chinese culture for foreign learners, and culture plays a very important role in Chinese teaching. This requires that Chinese cultural works be introduced to other countries and cultures, which involves the guidance of translation theory and the methods of translation.Xuan Zang is one of the four leading translators of the famous Chinese ancient Buddhist Scriptures, whose translating theory and practice are regarded as "New translation" in the history of Buddhist Scriptures translation. It is because of the significance and value of his translation theory and practice, and of the fact that those theory and practice have not been fully and completely reviewed that there still exist something that needs to be re-evaluated and explored. This provides important guidance and reference for the translation of contemporary Chinese works, and contributes to enriching and updating relevant theory on Chinese teaching for foreign learners. It is, therefore, necessary that the theory and practice of Xuan Zang’s translation should be reviewed in detain from the perspective of Chinese classical document.The subjects of the study are Xuan Zang’s translation theory and practice. The study first discusses Xuan Zang’s translation theory and practice and the achievement in the translation of Chinese cultural works by adopting the above-mentioned theory and practice. Then, based on the author’s own achievements on Xuan Zang’s translation theory and practice, a new evaluation has been put forward and summary reached. Lastly, the conclusion has been reached based on the discussion about the teaching of Chinese for foreign learners, the author’s evaluation and summary and the previous studies on the application of Xuan Zang’s translation theory and practice in the translation of Chinese cultural works.The contents of the study are as follows:The Introduction part discusses the achievements made in the teaching of Chinese culture, especially the translation of Chinese cultural works, and those on Xuan Zang’s translation theory and practice. Then, it puts forward research problems and methods.Chapter One is first summarizes all the achievements at home and abroad made on Xuan Zang’s translation theory and discusses how to apply Xuan’s theory to the translation of Chinese cultural works; then, it devoted to the discussion of Xuan Zang’s translation theory in his translation of the four Chinese ancient Buddhist Scriptures, and makes a summary, based on which analysis and summary have been made on Xuan’s translation theory.All the studies on Xuan’s translation practice at home and abroad are discussed at the Second Chapter. The chapter then reviews Xuan’s translation conducted at his firm and his translation practices from the perspective of certain samples of the Buddhist Scriptures. Next, Xuan’s practices are assessed and analyzed, and the focus is shifted from finding guiding principles and theories from the specific practice to finding the feasibility from the specific practice, which are adopted in the translation of Chinese cultural works. Finally, the conclusion is made.Chapter Three makes a comparison between the summaries of the first two chapters, problems existing in contemporary translation of Chinese cultural works and various translation theories and skills at home and abroad related to the translation of Chinese cultural works. Then, the chapter looks at the potential effect and value of the above-mentioned achievements and summaries on the contemporary translation of Chinese cultural works, and discusses the ways to increase the benefits and decrease the side effects.The last part is the conclusion of the study, in which all the values and influences mentioned at Chapter Three are reviewed and summarized, and the conclusion is made. Also, expectations for future studies are proposed.
