In the late Qing Dynasty when Chinese diplomacy transited from tradition to modern,the relationship between China and Japan became one of the most important bilateralrelationships, presenting complex and special characteristics. Ambassadors to Japan fromHe Ru zhang to Wang Da xie, most of them are traditional Chinese intellectuals, exceptWang Feng zao、Hu Wei de who had received a new western education.Their knowledgeof the external world. especially the understanding of Japan had changed during contactingwith the outside. They got up the diplomatic stage in the key moment when the nationalcrisis was worsening and relations between Japan and China was growing tenser.Becoming the important role in the China-and-Japan diplomatic relations. They were theexecutors of the foreign policy, not the decision makers, but not passively executiveforeign policy, they tried to make due contributions to safeguard national sovereignty andnational dignity during making full use of the knowledge about the world and internationallaw knowledge.On the one hand,they committed to the development of the friendlyrelationship between China and Japan, promoting economic、political、cultural、educationexchange activities; On the other hand, in the diplomacy issue negotiations: Ryukyu, northKorea and Nagasaki events, Gando convention and other northeast problems of satesovereignty, they considered the overall situation, offered advice and suggestions, andmade their utmost efforts to fight for their point of view so they shall never live up to theirholy mission, providing rich historical reference. However, in the history background whenmodern Chinese was in semi-colonial and semi-feudal society and China was poor and weak, it’s difficult for the ambassadors to handle their diplomatic work day to day topractical steps forward, witch made their talents and roles become limited.
