The filial piety is the core value of Chinese traditional culture that combines the moraloutlook and world view. This paper takes the female filial piety in Chiangnan area duringthe Qing Dynasty as the research target, and focuses on the following aspects: the specificfilial conducts of the females south of Yangtze River in the Qing Dynasty; the rewards forthe filial females from the government and the family; the punishment for the unfilial; andhow the men of letters south of the Yangtze River view chastity. The body consists of fourchapters. The first chapter analizes the development of education in the female filiality inthe Qing Dynasty according to the textbooks and education content. The second makes ananalysis on the specific filial conducts based on the three kinds of women----unmarriedwomen, widows and daughters-in-law. The local record south of the Yangtze River,and thebiographies of the filial females recorded in the family disc spectrums are the mainreferences. The third chapter explores the rewards for the filial women and the punishmentfor the unfilial from the perspectives of the government and the family. The mainreferences are the national policy and laws as well as the family instruction. The fourthaims to treat reasonably and promote the sensible part in the filial piety and abandon thewrong viewpoint of chastity through an analysis on the attitudes of the men of letters southof the Yangtze River in the Qing Dynasty towards chastity, namely, the different opinionsin issues such as virgins’ chastity and widows’ remarriage.
