Tactics For Handling Structurally Run-On Sentences In C-E Consecutive Interpretation

This thesis intends to study tactics for handling structurally run-on sentences in C-Econsecutive interpretation. It is generally agreed that Chinese is parataxis-prominent, whileEnglish hypotaxis-prominent. Therefore, it is critical to properly interpret the structurallyrun-on sentences, as they are quite common in Chinese language and obviouslyparataxis-prominent. With the help of existing theories, this thesis concludes some methodsbased on case of interpretation of Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi’s answers to questions fromdomestic and overseas journalists on China’s foreign policy and external relations onMarch7,2011. The thesis consists of four parts. Part1introduces the case and its researchsignificance and deals with relevant theories, including the contrast of Chinese and Englishin terms of sentence structure and cohesive devices. Part2introduces the steps incompleting the case and difficult points to be solved. Part3proposes tentative tactics forhandling the interpretation of structurally run-on sentences and centers on theinterpretation of some specific examples. Part4offers a conclusion.
