Poet-monk ZhiYuan (976—1022) of who’s main activities at the early Song dynasty was born in Qiantang.He became a monk when he was eight years old. Thanks to his teacher the TianTai Zong Yuanqing Mage master,he alsobecome a very famous monks, In1016, he retreat in West Lake Gu Shan, became next to Lin Bu. He studied Buddhist scriptures and writed a lot of works,so he had be popularized with the designation of Gu Shan Mage. He not only knew Confucianism, but also understood Lao Chuang, left a lot of poetries and prose forbehind for us.As one monk who promoted the doctrine, ZhiYuan tried to renew the confucianism in his whole life. He was concerned by religious and sasangge, but his literary works XianJuBian was always be ignored. There were more than400poems in that book,which one-third of them were mailing poems. These poems reflected ZhiYuan’s friends and the lives of the monks in early Song dynasty. The poem of landscape was peaful and showed the scenery of the West Lake and the surroundings;The poem with the subject of object were various, some were used to represente the person, some disguessed the Buddhism; The historical poems were were very different with others; The poem that expressed his thoughts and feelings were very delicate; While there was a small number of fortress and poems with the women’s tone were unique at the early Song dynasty, they also shoued ZhiYuan’s pride and tenderness. And his comments of poetry were inimitable should be included to The Song dynasty poetry review.ZhiYuan experienced Emperor Taizong and Emperor Zhenzong of Song, His poems are difficult to get rid of Late-Tang Dynasty poetry style, because of his monk identity and sphere of activity. But ZhiYuan didn’t focus on the beautiful scnery and his internal mind, he imitated Bai Juyi to write allegorical poem positively and left a number of poems reflecting the social realities. In addition, he also recognized the shortcomings of existing literary at that time, and joined in the campaign that poem and prose revolutionary movement. He advocated the emphasis of poetry should be put on expressing the connotation not using the splendid words. Although his poetic produce didn’t meet his own poetic ideas, his creative spirite and efforts should be engrave on our mind.Because of ZhiYuan’s limited intercommunication and unpopular monograph and confined literary view, XianJuBian didn’t had a resounding impact. So in morden terms, we should give him an appropriate status in history of literature.
