"The contradictory expression of A and non-A" is a special kind of verbalexpression. It has its own uniqueness in semantic structure, grammatical structure,rhetorical function and rhetorical justification, etc. The research of this subject isbased on rhetoric as well as related theories of other disciplines such as logic,semantics, syntax, cognitive psychology and pragmatics, and this paper will researchsaid “contradictory expression of A and non-A” in five parts. A combined method ofdescription and explanation is adopted in the research, i.e. the rhetorical motivation ofsaid expression is explained based on the description and analysis of its rhetoricalstructure and rhetorical function."The contradictory expression of A and non-A "is one kind of the contradictoryexpressions and a variant form of extraordinary verbal expression."A and non-A"which features that words of antonym are set in a parallel structure is a sub-categoryof parallel structure. Collocation of words of antonym may seem a violation of the lawof formal logic, but from the deep semantic point of view, it implies the profoundphilosophy of dialectical unity."The contradictory expression of A and non-A" has a unique rhetorical structure.In terms of semantic structure, it breaks through the limitations of the law ofcontradiction and expresses the philosophy-implied semantic contents with thesupport of the contextual information. In terms of the grammatical structure, it is aspecial parallel structure which has many variant forms such as "A but non-A" and"both A and non-A" in practical applications."The contradictory expression of Aand non-A" is mostly used to express subjective emotions due to its rhetoricalfunction of making expressions concise, implicit and rich in implication.The innovation of this paper lies in: excavating the rhetorical motivations of "thecontradictory expression of A and non-A". In the last part of this paper, related theoriesof adjacent disciplines are used to explore its rhetorical motivations, including thelogical basis, the aesthetic basis, the cognitive basis and the pragmatics basis.
