Marcuse is the well-known representative of the main Frankfurt School, one ofthe most important of theorists of Western Marxism, he put forward popular culturecritical theory by criticisming the contemporary developed industrial society fromdifferent fields and by revealing the contemporary developed industrial society withtotalitarian characteristics. The paper take “popular culture” concept for clues,anglicizing the historical background and theoretical background of Herbert Marcuse’spopular culture critical theory profoundly, and by criticizing the consumptionalienation and unreasonable reality in capitalism society, Reavealing the aim ofcriticizing positive culture, single culture and repressed sexual culture. Marcuse arguedthat, with rapid developed of the industrial civilization in the contemporary developedcapitalist society, people’s need to material wealth has already been satisfied;meanwhile, also makes peace the persons opposing or unsatisfied with the socialsystem so as to make them submit to the ruling class. consequently, it appeared a totalalienation in the capitalist society, from science and technology to cultural circles, fromlabor to consumer fields, from man’s thought to social psychology, and even fromhuman beings to the relation between man and nature. Marcuse’s popular culturecritical theory uncover social essence that people are dominated and constrained by thepresent social system through the outside appearance that is highly free andprosperous.Marcuse’s popular culture critical theory has made us realize that controlling wayhas greatly changed in morden capitalist society. The focus of control has divertedfrom political, economic field to cultural one, as a result, modern capitalist society hasbecome a new totalitarian society. Marcuse’s theory of popular culture criticismprovides valuable academic to use for grasping the nature organizations’socialismharmonious society deeply and comprehensively in post-war capitalist society.
