A Study On The Voice Of Shanxi Zuoquan Dialect

Taken the dialect of Zuoquan County as the subject, this thesis aims to present a comprehensive record of the Phonology system of Zuoquan County and a description as well as an analysis of some of its phonetic phenomenon. The thesis consists of seven chapters.It first offers an introduction of the historical evolution, geography and population of Zuoquan County as well as present situations of the research of the phonology system of Zuoquan County. Then, it elaborates on the Phonology system of this dialect, including initial consonant, final, Citation tone, tone sandhi, retroflex final, sound changes of suffix, glottal stop dropping, checkedization, characters have two phonetic forms with glottal stop or vowel final, divided-sound words and syneresis words. In the third chapter, a chart is presented to show the coordination between initial consonant, final and Citation tone. Through comparisons of initial consonant, final and tone between Zuoquan dialect and Common Language, the fourth chapter concludes some corresponding rules between these two languages. In the following chapter, emphasis is placed on comparisons of the Phonology systems between Zuoquan Dialect and Mid-century Chinese. It comes to some correspondences of initial consonant, final, tone between Mid-century Chinese and Zuoquan dialect as well as correspondences of initial consonant and final between modern Zuoquan Dialect and Mid-century Chinese. The sixth chapter dedicates to the literary and colloquial expressions of Zuoquan dialect, involving both initial consonant and final. The last chapter includes a list of homophones in the dialect. It makes an alphabet by final of the monosyllabic words in the dialect.
