Based on the status quo of neologisms study both at home and abroad, this thesis studies neologisms chosen from Chinese press under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s communicative translation and semantic translation, in an attempt to explore the strategy of the English translation of Chinese press neologisms. With the rapid social development in recent years, numerous new concepts and new phenomenon have mushroomed. As a result, bountiful neologisms have been produced to reflect the huge changes. As one of the most important carriers of neologisms display and standardization, press is an ideal access for adequately qualified neologisms. Therefore, in the practice of C-E neologisms translation, reliability and practicability will be increased by resetting neologisms in press. The significance of studying neologisms C-E translation lies on improving and spreading Chinese language and culture, as well as upgrading China’s position in the international arena. Although there are a number of C-E neologisms dictionaries, study on this field still has a long way to go by building up theoretical foundation for better guidance and systematical research. Therefore, this present thesis chooses Peter Newmark’s communicative translation and semantic translation theory as its theoretical support. By comprehensively considering the text type and translation target, this theory properly instructs the practice of press neologisms C-E translation. After a theoretical analysis of press neologisms, this present thesis tentatively classifies press neologisms into lexical-gap neologisms, China neologisms, rhetoric neologisms, shared neologisms and loan neologisms according to their resemblance to English language. Accordingly, transcription, China English, adaption, borrowing and back-translation are adopted as translation strategies. From transcription to back-translation, the process indicates the transition of applying semantic translation and communicative translation, which testifies the dynamic feature of this theory itself. In accordance with different language function types and translation purposes, under the guidance of semantic and communicative theory, this thesis arms to provide a new way of thinking in C-E translation of neologisms.
