In recent years, more and more students from developing countries, such as India, Nepal, and Pakistan and so on, come to our country to study clinical medicine, which is received in a mode of pure English. According to statistics, the number of medical overseas students has been increasing since2000.It ranks the second in all subjects and is only in the behind of(only next to the number of) the liberal arts majors. Besides, Pakistan students take a great proportion in oversea students. In2008,2009,2010and2011, the number of Pakistan students ranked the9th in all the overseas students in China (in four consecutive years from2008to2011) for a fourth consecutive year. After more than ten years’exploration, our country has formed a comparatively complete medical education system (English), but Chinese teaching to medical students is still in a vacuum. Chinese teaching research on how to teach students according to their nationalities is being paid more and more attention, but most of these studies are aimed at students from Japan, South Korea, the United States, and Europe. However, research aimed at students from Pakistan is really rare, especially in the field of their Chinese teaching. Therefore, it is of great necessity to conduct research on the Chinese teaching to students from Pakistan. Taishan Medical College where I am working has a number of Pakistan medical students, which perfectly provides as a sample for this study. After a series of teaching practice, questionnaires, and interviews with teachers, students and supervisors of foreign students, I shall propose the major problems in the process of Chinese teaching to Pakistan medical students. First, apparently there is a difficulty in the study of speech and Chinese characters, that is, people often confuse aspirates and unaspirated sound of the initials, and’e’,’ii’,’er’in the finals. In Urdu, there is no tone, so it has become an obstacle. Second, there are some problems with students, including that they are not clear of their Chinese learning objective, have no good habits and no interest in Chinese studies. Third, the country hasn’t made a clear regulation of Chinese teaching syllabus and the Chinese level that students should achieve; therefore it causes the teaching tilts at windmills. What’s more, sometimes the Chinese teaching plan may have conflicts with students’religious activities. Fourth, teachers are short of experience in teaching Chinese as a foreign language, having limited English, lack of medical knowledge and a fully understanding of Pakistan national background. Fifth, Suitable ordinary Chinese teaching material for medical students is very few and it lacks of cohesion with basic medical Chinese knowledge. Sixth, in the aspect of administration, management rules and regulations of foreign students, further improvement should be made. Placing foreign students in a rather independent area for their study and life does no benefit to their communication and contacts with Chinese students. That is to say, on no condition will they get the opportunity of employing Chinese.According to the problems above, we shall put forward some corresponding countermeasures and suggestions. We shall suggest that teaching activities be launched in terms of the difficulties in voice and Chinese characters learning. We shall call on the country to determine the nature and position of the targeted students’Chinese teaching. We shall suggest the targeted students take a one-year preparatory Chinese course. We shall suggest Chinese teachers receive some training in English, Foreign Chinese and Medicine. Besides, to these targeted students, on one hand we shall try to exploit some suitable ordinary Chinese materials and medical Chinese materials and, on the other hand we shall perfect the students’management rules and regulations.Only by means of these can we provide them with more chances to communicate with Chinese students. I sincerely hope that these strategies and suggestions can provide useful references for Pakistan students and foreign medical majors’Chinese teaching.
