This report is based on the author’s translation practice of Mistress Pat, a masterpiece of Lucy Maud Montgomery. The author with several other classmates form a translation group and successfully complete the translation task under the guidance of their tutors. Each member of the team is responsible for their own part and writes a translation report independently. The report can be divided into six parts:the first part is a brief introduction to the whole translation task, including the aim, organizers and background of the translation task; the second part introduces the translation process in details, such as division of work, cooperation between translators as well as the schedule for the translation; the third part introduces the writer and plot of this novel and in particular, analyzes stylistic features of the book; the fourth part is a brief summary of Eugene A. Nida’s theory of functional equivalence and its application to the translation practice; the fifth part puts forward some translation strategies by showing how the translator applies Nida’s theory to the translation practice in terms of lexical, syntactic and stylistic levels:at lexical level, this report analyzes how to translate culture-loaded words and how to change part of speech. At syntactic level, it sums up strategies in translating long sentences, passive and active voice and positive and negative expression. At stylistic level, it analyzes the translation of figures of speech and dialect. The last part is the conclusion of the whole translation process and this report.Through analyzing the translation process of Mistress Pat, the author hopes to provide reference to other translators of literary works and attract more Chinese readers to this book.
