A Comparative Study On He Zhu And Xin Qiji’s Knight-errant Ci

The knight-errant is the most special product of ancient Chinese society, and the evaluations of the knight-errant by people are always mixed blessing. Knight-errant’s spiritual temperament and personality ideal has a great attraction on people from all strata of society. In literature, the literati use the images of knight-errant as the carrier of the emotions and to express the chivalrous feelings. The images of knight-errant are also entered Song Poetry("Ci"), it has become the continuation of chivalrous spirit and chivalrous feelings in Song Dynasty. Knight-errant Ci is a new combination form of the knight-errant and intellectual in the culture of Song Dynasty, which was divided from the ancient warrior class. Knight-errant Ci reflected the internalization process of chivalrous spirit and chivalrous feelings in the scholar-officials as well as the special spiritual world of Song Dynasty’s scholar-officials. The Knight-errant Ci originated in the Dunhuang Ci, it has inherited the traditional of Knight-errant Ci since the Pre-Qin Period. After the participation of the literati in Tang and Five Dynasties, the Knight-errant Ci was able to get rising and development, and then it has becoming more mature in Song Dynasty. He Zhu and Xin Qiji were two representative personages who wrote Knight-errant Ci in Song Dynasty, they had similar personal experiences, the writing style also had successive inherits in time. The experience of being knight-errant in their youth and the chivalrous personality was their directly motivation to create Knight-errant Ci. The different styles of their Knight-errant Ci were derived from the anxiety about knight-errant identity. When He Zhu and Xin Qiji’s knight-errant identity were confronted with the social environment conflict between elevating the literature and debasing the military, the contradictions between individual pursuit and social reality, because of their own different personality as well as the strength of individual will, their Knight-errant Ci showed different style and features. He Zhu was eager to get rid of the knight-errant identity, which made his Knight-errant Ci style gloomy and sadness. Xin Qiji persisted in his knight-errant identity, which made his Knight-errant Ci style vigorous and unrestrained.
