On Aesthetic Constituents In Poetry Translation

Poetry is the highest form of the art of language. Its unique form of condensation conveys the nature of beauty. Poetry translation belongs to a special artistic category, which consists in conveying the original artistic concept in another language and enabling the reader to undergo aesthetic experience in the process of reading the version just as he reads the original one. Therefore, poetry translation can not only transfer the linguistic units, but also transform the artistic beauty and spirit.Since the 1950s, linguistic translation studies have come to prosperity. However, these linguistic approaches have generally tended to see translation as a linguistic operation exclusively and thus the artistic and aesthetic nature of poetry translation is neglected. In the author's perspective, in order to understand the activity of translation better, the exploration of aesthetic nature in poetry translation has a dynamic and profound significance. Therefore, this thesis is an attempt to study the aesthetic constituents in poetry translation especially that in the English translation of Tang poetry and tries to reveal the artistic nature of poetry translation through the systematical study of aesthetic objects and subjects. Finally, it is hoped to perfect and enrich translation theory of poetry.This thesis tries to explore and analyze the aesthetic objects and subjects in the dialectical unity of form and content. Form and content can not be divided and they are closely related to each other: form is the embodiment of content and the existence of content is determined by form. Tang poetry is the essence of Chinese classical poetry, the highest form of expression of Chinese classical culture, and it is the perfect reflection of form and content. Therefore, taking Tang poetry and its translation as the object of analysis has great artistic significance.The translator and the target language reader as the aesthetic subjects are actively involved in the aesthetic act of poetry translation.
