Simultaneous Interpreting (SI) is regarded as an oral translation form to transformone language (the source language) into another one nearly at the same time with aspeaker. It has been widely applied in international conferences, business negotiationsand academic exchanges. A number of scholars and researchers deem it the supremeachievement of translation because of its unique advantages of high efficiency, highquality and high standards. Currently, however, it has been found by lots ofinterpreting practitioners that skills and theories may not always be successfullyapplied in authentic practices, which shows a gap between the ideal and the reality.This study is an attempt to analyze and assess SI skills both theoretically andpractically. In terms of theory, a series of SI skills from some experienced interpretersare discussed. From the practical perspective, a case study, whose materials areselected from the transcribed recording of Yao Ming’s speech at his retirement pressconference, is used to explain under what circumstances problems emerge and whatmay help improve quality of interpreting. It is hoped that this study can help offersome constructive suggestions ultimately to enhance interpreting quality.
