This thesis conducts a comparative study on English to Chinese simultaneous interpreting based on the Effort Model proposed by Daniel Gile and the Evaluation Parameters of Interpreting Quality put forward by Cai Xiaohong.By comparing the interpreting performance of participants under the same controlled conditions,the study analyzes the distinction between professional and student interpreters in using brevity strategy,as well as its impact on the interpreting quality.This thesis first presents an introduction to the Effort Model and the Evaluation Parameters of Interpreting Quality.Then it defines the brevity strategy in detail as simplification,generalization,and omission according to previous research.After the theoretical analysis,an experiment was designed to observe the frequency of three techniques of brevity strategy used by professional and student interpreters,and the relationship between techniques and parameters of interpreting quality through quantitative and qualitative research.Finally,it puts forward suggestions on improving the quality of interpretation,which has a beneficial effect on students' acquiring expertise in this field.This study reveals that the use of brevity strategy in simultaneous interpreting is one of the reasons for the gap between student and professional interpreters.The generalization technique is the least adopted by both professional and student interpreters in the experiment.The professional interpreter applied the simplification technique more frequently than omission,while the student interpreters are more likely to use omission.Simplification has a strong positive correlation with the interpreting quality,while omission has the opposite.Besides,compared with the students,the professional interpreter usually applies the strategy in an active and timely response and takes more effective measures to deal with the cognitive overload during simultaneous interpretation.
