In the1980s, a TV series named18Years in the Guomintang’s Camp, directed by Wang Fulin and Zhang Lianwen being the main performer, became a prelude to China’s spy drama the moment it appeared on CCTV1. And in the21st century, Silent Oath came into being with its special and mysterious characteristics, which showed a booming period of China’s spy drama. Then, Plotting, Hidden Spies, and Qi Pao were put on TV screen one by one for the following several years. Especially, for the last few years, the broadcasting rating and audience rating of spy drama have been keeping really high. So, it is no doubt that it is such a miracle that spy drama can stand out of abundant TV series of different types. And the popularity of spy drama is indispensable to their own charm which is mainly reflected in vivid descriptions of characters, as well as guidance of dominant ideology and joint efforts of crews for their production. Plotting makes people familiar with An Zaitian acted by Liu Yunlong and Hidden Spies with Yu Zecheng acted by Sun Honglei. For films, shape of characters in a work is directly related to its success and failure, and TV series are no exception. Therefore, shaping vivid and manifold characters and presenting them in front of the audience is of vital importance for films and TV programs.This paper is targeted at characters in TV series filmed in the21st century and tries to define spy drama against these spy drama filmed in the21st century. And the paper lays stress on in-depth analysis of hero characters, spy characters and female characters in spy drama through adopting such research methods as radio and television art theory and aesthetics. The paper is composed of three chapters. In Chapter1, the paper analyzes hero characters in China’s spy drama filmed in the21st century and is made up of two parts. One is about analysis of historical context in which traditional hero characters is formed, and reasons and characteristics of change of new hero characters. And the other is concerned with analysis of new hero characters shaped in the21st century spy drama with specific examples. Chapter2discusses the spy characters, which is the negative image in spy drama filmed in the21st century. Similarly, this chapter is also made up of two parts. The first part is about denunciation of shape of negative images in traditional TV series and rebuilt of willingness to shape. The second part is concerned with a comprehensive analysis of spy characters in China’s spy drama on basis of the preceding analysis. Chapter3is mainly about in-depth analysis of the newly-shaped female characters in spy drama filmed in the21st century from the perspective of rise of female consciousness and female characters in spy drama.Furthermore, the conclusion part concludes advantages and main problems of shaping characters in spy drama nowadays. Through analysis and explanation of characters in spy drama, this paper tries to illustrate some true and realistic meaning of these images for modern people so that it can be meaningful in guiding creativity and reform of prospective characters in China’s spy drama.
