The separable word is a unique language phenomenon of Chinese, which study has neverbeen interrupted since the scholars concern. Many scholars have conducted a tirelessexploration and achieved fruitful results. Due to its particularity, the teaching of separableword has been a long-standing problem in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Thelearner’s dictionary is an effective learning tool for Chinese learners. Therefore, based on thestudies of the predecessors, we select the interpretation of separable words in the learner’sdictionary as a new perspective for research.Definition is the core task of the lexicography. The contrastive study between dictionariesof the same type has important theoretical and practical significance for the revision andcompilation. This paper selects two authoritative extroversive learner’s dictionary, ACommercial Press Dictionary for Learners of Chinese as a Foreign Language and A ChineseDictionary for Learners and Teachers, adopting the research methods of contrastive analysis, the combination of description and interpretation and the combination of qualitative andquantitative, to investigate the separation of meanings, definition methods, definitionexamples. We sum up the similarities and differences in the aspects of definition, and putforward some suggestions about the problems arisen, which are wished to provide a referenceto compile the extroversive learner’s dictionary. This paper consists of six chapters, and it is organized as follows:The first chapter is the introduction. First, it describes the latest research status of separablewords, and discusses its shortcomings. Then it introduces its research perspective, the content, research significance and research methods. The second chapter is the construction of the corpus. We first define the corpus in thischapter, and then present the detailed construction of corpus, implementation and application. Finally, we analyze the corpus statistics. The third chapter is contrastive analysis of the division of separation of meanings in thetwo dictionaries. Through analyzing the characteristics of separable words in corpus, we makea contrastive analysis on the different division of separation of meanings about the separablewords in the two dictionaries. And then we make an analysis of its causes. The fourth chapter four is the contrastive research on the definition methods of separable words in the two dictionaries. Based on previous theoretical results and the analysis ofspecific corpus data, we divide the definition methods of separable words, which are sharedby these two dictionaries, into five categories and nineteen subcategories. By means ofstatistics and analysis on various definition methods, we summarize the similarities anddifferences of separable words between two learner’s dictionaries. The fifth chapter is the comparative study on examples of the separable word in the twodictionaries. The study includes the number, type and format of examples, and lays a lot ofemphasis on the format of examples. Through analyzing the corpus, we categorize the formatof examples into three categories and fifteen subcategories, and make an analysis of thestatistics and examples. We find that the definition methods of separable words in twodictionaries are both similar and dissimilar. Therefore, we summarize the characteristics anddifferences of them, and put forward suggestions and opinions on problems which occur inthe aspect of the examples of separable words between two dictionaries. The sixth chapter is the conclusion. It makes a summary and points out the deficiency ofthe research, and comes up with the prospects for further researches. The innovation of thispaper lies in selecting the separable word in extroversive learner’s dictionaries as the researchobject, both theoretical and practical. By analyzing real corpus, we obtain substantial data andconclusions. It has certain referential value for the revision and compilation of learner’sdictionary, as well as teaching Chinese as a foreign language.
