With the soaring development of modern science and technology and globalization,contemporary literature is more and more deeply influenced by image and visual culture inwhich the transformation from image to simulacra is altering modern people’s aesthetic tasteand expectations of literature. In this context, by sorting out the image-literature relations inthe traditional Chinese and western cultures, subsequently, analyzing the new trend of themodern literary and art circles in terms of image-literature interactions, and understanding theimage-literature relation on the basis of inner thinking mechanisms can the related research bereduced to the pseudo-problem filled with general terms. A glimpse of the literary history willindicate that image and literature, the image thinking and literary thinking, which aremutually complementary, enable human beings to know about the society and express theirthinking and emotions. Only by treating them with equal attention and looking into therelations between them from a dialectical, historical and specific perspective can theimage-literature relations be fully interpreted.This thesis is divided into six chapters. The Introduction touches the contemporarysymbiotic relationship between image and literature and accordingly, proposes the researchquestion: the image and literature interactions influenced by news media. Chapter Onesummarizes the development and evolution of the image-literature relations in the Chineseand western traditional cultures so as to bring out the new changes of modern imagerythinking and literary thinking. Chapter Two analyzes the new trend of modernimage-literature relation, discusses about the inner links between media transition and visualaesthetics and illustrates the similarities and differences among the relationship betweenimage and literature, between imagery thinking and literary thinking.Chapter Three discusses the interrelationship between imagery thinking and literarythinking by analyzing the thinking mechanism from the perspective of the opticalunconsciousness, visual metaphor and the transition of the image, literature and sound.Chapter Four investigates the imagery thinking of literature from the perspective of receptionand consumption and points out its activity, productivity and complexity. It also analyzes thenew changes of literary visualization and self-identity and social identity. It concludes that thetrend of literary visualization indicates the cultural identity of visual culture and the trend of cultural visualization different from the printing culture.Chapter Five discusses the image-literature relations in the field of literary production,spread and consumption. It further analyzes the image-literature relations in the field ofcultural production in terms of the authors, the author’s thinking and the process of literaryproduction and points out that the spread of image and literature manifests the dual effect, i.e.,image and literature are mutually dependent and complementary. Then it analyzes the newcharacteristics of the image-literature relations in the field of consumption in terms of theconsumers’ attitude and feelings, the changes of consumers’ thinking and new consumingmechanism. Chapter Six analyzes the dilemmas of image-literature relations, and put forwardsuggestions to deal with them. It maintains that commercial gains are closely related with theoverflow of images in people’s daily life and entertainment are preferred in images usingmodern medias as the carrier. It concludes that the combination of visual culture and literatureare the effective strategies to foster the quality of the nations.
