Now the world has been in a multi-cultural communication era and is moving in thedirection of becoming an integrated entity. China is accelerating its pace of absorption tothe best parts of the cultures of others and there is no doubt that both the West and the Eastneed the nourishment of Chinese culture. As the most important tool in communication, translation starts to lay its emphasis on the culture. Many scholars began to reconsidertranslation from the cultural perspective and to discuss the relationship between translationand culture,in the light of which cultural translation theory has taken into form. LiuMiching’s cultural translation theory is such a comprehensive theory framework which isquite adaptable for the transmission of Chinese traditional culture. His theory has pushedtranslation studies a step forward and brought a profound influence in the field oftranslation studies in China.Over1400extant poems by Tu Fu have indisputably evidenced themselves as a peakin traditional Chinese literature through their profound messages and rich artistic merits. His poems touch upon areas such as the description of nature, the commentary onhistorical figures, the lamentation on his experience the portrayal of skilled craftsmen andthe depiction of birds and animals. His poems have been translated into many languages, such as Japanese, French, and Italian and Russian. There also exist large amounts offamous English translation versions in western countries. Although western translators trytheir best to take culture into account in the translation of Chinese classical poems fromcultural level, they are all motivated under the context of western cultures, which mayinevitably pose a great gap between the source language culture and the target languageculture.Tu Fu’s poems were honored as an “epic” as well as a treasure of Chinese traditionalculture. This present thesis reviews the existing research guided by versions of Tu Fu’spoems as special samples for analysis. It consists of six chapters including introduction and conclusion. Chapter two is a retrospect of cultural translation study and a brief introductionof Liu Miching’s cultural translation theory. Chapter three is a brief introduction about TuFu and his poems. Chapter Four and Chapter Five analyzes the cultural translation in TuFu’s poems based on Liu Miching’s cultural translation theory. This thesis is based on Liu Miching’s cultural translation theory.
