A Report On The English-chinese Translation Under The Guidance Of Susan Bassnett' S Cultural Translation Theory

This is a report on the translation of the excerpt from Rebekah Clements' A Cultural History of Translation in Early Modern Japan,a book on humanities and social sciences.It is the first book to offer a comprehensive survey of the role of translation in Japan during the Tokugawa period,and systematically classify the academic history of research results in relevant fields.The book involves many terminologies and culture-loaded expressions,making this translation practice full of challenges.Therefore,the combination of translation practice with Susan Bassnett' s Cultural Translation Theory is of great significance.On the basis of Bassnett' s Cultural Translation Theory,this report focuses on the principles of taking culture as the translation unit and producing functional equivalence in the target language culture.The report studies translation strategies of terminologies and sentences in academic works from the perspectives of cultural compensation and cultural compatibility.The report aims to grasp the systematic,theoretical and logical characteristics of academic works and to apply the corresponding translation strategies flexibly on the basis of being familiar with cultural background and having certain professional knowledge.It's found that the cultural compensation methods can convey cultural implications of titles and terminologies precisely and straightforwardly.Cultural compensation methods can make the translation free from the original form and realize the goal of cultural transformation from literal meaning to cultural meaning.As for the translation of long and difficult sentences,by means of processing the thinking mode and the language logic,and decoding the cultural information,this report takes the cultural compatibility as the theoretical basis.This report expounds the significance of Susan Bassnett' s Cultural Translation Theory for the translation of academic works,especially for the translation of terms,titles and difficult sentences.It is hoped that the Cultural Translation Theory can shed some light on the processing of cultural information in English-Chinese translation.
