Research On Fuzzy Numerals Translation In Tang Poetry From The Perspective Of Theory Of Three Beauties

One of the difficulties in the translation of Tang poetry is the translation of numbers.In Chinese culture,numbers not only express quantity,but also have their own unique culture.In Tang poetry,the meanings and functions of fuzzy numerals are diverse.Thus,only by accurately translating the numbers in Tang poetry can we deliver the beauty to the target readers.Therefore,it is of great significance to study the translation methods of fuzzy numerals in poetry in order to better spread poetic culture.The translation methods of fuzzy numerals are diverse.Xu Yuanchong’s “Theory of Three Beauties” can play a guiding role in choosing the translation methods of fuzzy numerals in poetry.Xu Yuanchong’s translation of the Three Hundred Poems of the Tang Dynasty is the crystallization of his translation practice and theoretical study,which is recognized as first-class.The research on the translation methods of fuzzy numerals will help us to translate fuzzy numerals in ancient poems more accurately in the future.From the perspective of Theory of Three Beauties,this thesis takes Xu Yuanchong’s translation of Three Hundred Poems of Tang Dynasty as the research text,adopts the methods of literature research,case analysis,etc.,and makes a detailed analysis on some typical translation cases.Under the guidance of Beauty in Sense,Sound and Form,this thesis studies the fuzzy numerals in Tang poetry from the aspects of meanings,translation methods and the reasons for adopting the methods.Different translation methods used in different situations are explained with specific examples.It is found that: 1.The choice of the translation method of fuzzy numerals in Tang poetry should not be considered alone.When choosing a translation method,the overall situation should be considered.2.Theory of Three Beauties acts as an important guidance in translating fuzzy numerals in Tang Poetry.3.Beauty in Sense ranks the first place in poem translation.The translation of fuzzy numerals is mainly to convey the Beauty in Sense.To achieve this,the methods such as,literal translation,free translation,imitation,omission,and fuzzy equivalence,etc.are frequently employed.4.Beauty in Sound ranks the second place in the fuzzy numeral translation of Tang poetry,the main performance of which is rhyme.When translating the fuzzy numerals to achieve Beauty in Sound,free translation,literal translation,and imitation are used.5.Beauty in Form ranks the third place in the translation of the fuzzy numerals in Tang poetry.It is usually realized in the length and antithesis of poetry.Free translation,literal translation,and imitation are frequently adopted.6.As for the translation methods,free translation is the most frequently used method;literal translation is sometimes used;omission is often used;the frequency of imitation translation is low and the fuzzy equivalence only appear in a few examples.The purpose of this thesis is to provide a new perspective on the study of numeral translation in Tang poetry and appeal translators to pay more attention to the numbers in the translation of Tang poetry so that our culture can be better spread around the world.
