Nowadays, with the continuously develop of education and increasingly interactwith the foreign countries, there is a common phenomenon that more and morestudents tend to study abroad. University/college, as one of the most importanteducation base, should improve itself in front of the irresistible trend by way ofattracting the essence of foreign education, promoting national education, and finallystepping forward the whole world. The appropriateness name of a university/collegecan be regarded as intangible assets, which has a strong influence on its educationdevelopment. The thesis attempts to solve the existing problems of the Chineseuniversity/college names in English translation from the perspective of “faithfulnessand expressiveness”.“Faithfulness” means the naming of Chinese university/collegeshould be reasonable, and “expressiveness” refers to the decent of English translation.Translation practice is unlikely to carry out efficiently without the theoreticalsupport. Functionalist Skopos Theory, breaking through the shackles of traditionaltranslation theory, started in the1970s in Germany. In Skopos Theory,“translationdecisions guided by the function you want to achieve by means of translation”, whichgives a new theoretical support to the translation of university/college names. Theguidance scope of Skopos Theory has applied to text of the advertisement, guide, andso on.Under the guidance of Skopos Theory, three functions of the university/collegename are summed up, informative function, culture transmitting function andappellative function, and the former two are considered as the major functions. Forthe purpose of research, the universities/colleges are divided into two types,comprehensive university/college and multidisciplinary university/college. In addition,multidisciplinary universities/colleges are divided into eleven types. Then thesituations of university/college both in Chinese and English versions are discussed.During the discussion about Chinese version, the writer mainly focuses on thecombination and renaming phenomenon, and also studied their semantic features.While discussing the English version, six trends as well as current situations about the two versions are been found out. The following part is the key point of the entirepaper, analyzing the problems and proposing solutions. The writer sets out to settlethe problems from three aspects that are lexical level, semantic level and cultural level.In the enlighten of Skopos theory, the writer summarizes two translation strategiessuited to Chinese university/college translation, literal translation and Transliteration.Finally, the further study about “faithfulness and expressiveness” is conducted topoint out the importance and necessity of Chinese university/college English nametranslation,...
