The Study Of The Male Images In Guan Hanqing’s Plays

Although the male image in Guan Hanqing’s plays is not shining as the females’, itstill has its unique characteristics and connotation. The male figure is the basic way toexplore the cultural mentality and social psychological of Guan Hanqing. Basing on thedrama texts, opera works and the historical data, this paper gives a logical and historicalinterpretation. On this basis, through the depth analysis on the male image, we analyzethe playwright’s the law ideal of the rule, ideal of life and the cultural mentality, and themale image manipulation. This paper consists of four chapters:The first chapter makes the research on the main male image categories and itscharacteristics. Clean image is a kind of image who is the rule for people with a humanface. On contrary, the corrupt officials are incompetence and money judgment,disregard for human life. The generals are brave and vengeful. Powerful bureaucrat is aspecial class of Yuan Dynasty, who makes them for the law and does as they please.Scholars image are superior image, which have the lofty aspirations.The second chapter chiefly analyzes the important male image, focusing on thestudy of the personality characteristics. In his plays, Baogong is not fear of power,impartial with the heavy sentiment and three-dimensional fullness. Guan Yu is bold andcrafty. Pei Du’s noble moral is a student model. Wen Qiao’s respect for women andsome calculating is a fool image.The third chapter, for the perspective of cultural, analyzes the connotation of maleimage. He expresses the ideal of rule by law, and wants to realize his ideal via theofficial expectation. While the males actively enter the official and they are ahead of thelife, which is the embodiment of his life ideal. With the influence of social culture,personal experience and cultural idea, the male images also present the weakening.The fourth chapter, from the angle of application with artistic technique, analyzesthe characteristics of male image in Guan Hanqing’s. We do the research mainly fromthe conflict, the character language, sketch and comic writing technique.
