Drew by Wenju Chou, a painter who lived in Southern Tang Dynasty,"Chinese Chess Playing Behind Two Byobu" is not only a documentary works that reflects the life in palace, but also an equisite portrait. It is a scene when Jing Li, the monarch of Southern Tang Dynasty, and his brothers played Chinese chess. In this painting, there is a byobu which has a painting that describes the poetry, Sleep, of Juyi Bai, behind the four people. There is also a landscape byobu in Sleep. And that is why its name is "Chinese Chess Playing Behind Two Byobu". The characters in this painting are totally different. The well set cloth lines, the natural tone, the thin and tough brushwork, the slight cadence quiver and the alternate kindness with severity bring this painting a unique style. The expressions of the four people are depicted delicately, vividly and personally. Furnishings in the room are witty designed. Inlaying gold Touhu and chess box are placed in a long couch. And there is a page standing right behind the table. The cozy circumstance and chess playing scene fuse together, foiling out the characters’leisure and carefree mood. This piece of work is a representation of the real royal life in Southern Tang Dynasty. In other hand, ingenious design and picture-in-picture technique improve temperament and interest of this painting in the form of depth. This article mainly studies the painting in four parts.
