Using symphony orchestra associated with one or several Chinese instruments is a very popular music combination for music composition in these years. This dissertation makes the analysis of the piece "Si· Zhi", which is the author’s master degree work, as an example to tell the possibilities of musical expression and East-West intercourse in this kind of music form.In the first chapter, the time character and aesthetical value are discussed. At first, the musical language characters of the Chinese instruments together with the relationship between them and20th century western music’s trend to sound are combined by the author. Second, this relationship is brought into the typical music form within the compositional expectation of the composer. The coexistence of the musical languages and compositional means of both Chinese and Western music are expatiated to express the interest of’innovation in regression’. In the second chapter, the author analyses his piece from different aspects. The form, structure, the dialogue manners between Pipa part and orchestra, etc. are explained to the final realization of the sounds attributed to the related compositional techniques. From the analysis, the conditions of East-West intercourse in form, structure, metrics and other aspects are concluded, that is consistent with the composer’s expectation. At the point of view in both composition and music theory, comparing and amalgamating the music elements of Chinese traditional music and western contemporary music is a very valuable subject. It will be more rational and objective to recognize the music works in time and future by exploring their internal combinations.
