On Press Conference Interpretation Strategies And Interpreters’ Training--from The Perspective Of Effort Model

Interpretation has played an influential role as a bridge of information transmission and a tool in eliminating language and cultural barriers. With the economic globalization and Chinas uprising, press conference interpreting is indispensable in international communication. Many researchers turn their eyes on this subject during the past two decades in China. Nowadays more and more international activities and meetings are held in China. The annual NPC (National People’s Congress) and CPPCC (Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference) has become the focus of the public. Due to its official authority, it is strictly for interpreters choosing. Not only are they expected with solid bilingual foundation, good verbal aptitude, strong ability of logic and wide range of knowledge, but also they need to master certain interpretation strategies. This thesis chooses Chinese-English interpretation in press conference of "NPC" and "CPPC" as its research object.The thesis analyses the features of press conference interpretation and figures out the factors causing the failures in efforts distribution. Based on the Effort Model theory, the thesis proposes the methods and strategies applied in the training of Effort Model. With the analysis of newly materials, the thesis stresses that Effort Model not only promote the students acquisition of the second language, but also improve their interpreting skills theoretically and practically. It concludes that interpreter can do his/her task well only with different efforts in reasonable arrangement in the process of interpretation.This thesis is composed of six parts, except including four chapters in between.The first part, a brief introduction unveils the research backgrounds and previous studies on press conference interpretation and strategies on Gile’s Effort Model.The second part, theoretical foundation is laid based on Effort Model. The author introduces features of languages in PCI from its content, register and function.The third part, this is the core content, which is devoted to the strategies of CI in the light of the Effort Model. In this part, materials results demonstrate that proper use of different efforts promote interpreters performance; otherwise, the performance is hindered, which laid some theoretical foundation for the next part.The fourth part, methods and tactics on interpreting training are provided underlying the guidance of different performance between novices and expert interpreters. The author states that "sight translation" and "focus-on-meaning" distributes a lot to the interpreting training.The whole thesis comes to a natural conclusion in the last part which wrans up the research findings, problems spotted and sparkles further research in this direction Finally, the author hopes that the strategies summarized in thesis can be of some guidance for interpreters in the interpretation practice and training and interpreters may take the strategies as reference in the interpreting practice so as to achieve interpretive effects.
