A Study On Application Of Plain English Strategies In Chinese-English Conference Interpretation

Based on Skopos Theory, this thesis mainly discusses the application of plain English strategies in Chinese-English conference interpretation. In accordance with the characteristics of Chinese-English conference interpretation and Plain English, the thesis aims to summarize some plain English strategies suitable to C-E conference interpretation with the analysis of the data collected from the C-E international conferences.The thesis starts with a review of the definition, characteristics, development, and research of plain English and conference interpretation. Then the two basic modes of conference interpretation (simultaneous interpretation (SI) and consecutive interpretation (CI)) are introduced in full, including their translation units and processes and previous processing strategies. In addition, the interpreting quality standards for different conferences are discussed and the appropriate standards applicant to CI and SI are pointed out. Also, difficulties in C-E conference interpretation are analyzed and the urgency of improving interpreting quality is noticed.Afterwards, the thesis proves the feasibility of Plain English Strategies in Chinese-English conference interpretation in light of three rules (skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule) of Skopos Theory. And a set of plain English strategies suitable to Chinese-English conference interpretation are summed from the two aspects:translation units (lexicon, sentence, paragraph) and tone, with many examples from conference interpretation text being presented, compared, and analyzed from the angles of the plain English strategies, C-E conference interpretation practice and Skopos Theory. This thesis tries to formulate an efficient, systematic, and scientific professional strategy system for the conference C-E SI and CI, combining the analysis and comparison to prove the feasibility. In conclusion, the thesis studies the C-E conference interpretation and plain English strategies and sets up a system of PE conference interpretation strategies to reach a goal of providing reference and instruction to the interpretation practice, field study, and interpreting software research.
