Based on Daniel Gile's Effort Model and Primary and Secondary Information Theory, this thesis explores how to extract information in E-C simultaneous interpretation(SI)for impromptu speeches and how to choose the right interpreting strategy. Then according to research findings and data analysis, the thesis proves that these strategies can ensure more accurate and efficient SI,and introduces new possible strategies based on the experiment.Data analysis shows that although secondary information accounts for the same proportion as primary information, the former conveys few useful messages. This requires interpreters to screen out useless information so as to interpret the speech more appropriately and efficiently. The strategies employed by the interpreters during the experiment are divided into three categories:omission, generalization and replacement. As the first two strategies have already been well researched and proved effective, information replacement is the new finding of the thesis.Quantitative and qualitative analyses show that the more the interpreters use these strategies, the better their interpretation quality is.Therefore, the following conclusion can be drawn:information extraction, and omission, generalization and replacement of secondary information can improve the quality of E-C SI for impromptu speeches.
