On Strategies And Causes Of Transformation Of Nouns In English-Chinese Translation

By translation, anything expressed in one language can nevertheless be expressedin another language: people with different languages from different cultures can surelycommunicate with each other，by seeking equivalence，reorganizing the form and thesemantic structure of the original message，in proper ways，of course. While sourcelanguage and target language are never the less two different languages in theworld.Since our job is to seek equivalence in content or information，not absoluteformal correspondence，we would nevertheless meet with formal deviations from theoriginal textual material.Transformation is one of the very emergency measures to seekin the target language the equivalent information of the source language. In this way，contents of both source language and target language are in keeping with each other，though forms may be somewhat changed. So the thesis would touch upon strategiesand causes of transformation of part of speech in English-Chinese translation.Based on the the author’s own translation practice and related translationstrategies of transformation of part of speech, this present thesis would focus on thetransformation of nouns. On the one hand, this thesis analyzed the transformation rulesfrom nouns into various parts of speech in English-Chinese translation. On the otherhand, most of examples in the thesis are selected from the author’s own translationmaterials, analyses would be more practical.The present thesis starts with the definition and various kinds of transformation inEnglish-Chinese translation, focus on analyzing strategies of the transformation ofnouns in English into verbs，adjectives and adverbs in Chinese:(1)An English nounpossessing the property of a verb or derived from a verb is often transformed into averb when translated into Chinese; some nouns derived from verbs by adding suchsuffixes: As-er or-or do not really indicate identity or some certain profession，butimply much more than the meaning of a verb，we are supposed to transform such nounsinto Chinese verbs.(2)Some abstract nouns，which are derived from adjectives orpreceded by an indefinite article，are transformed into Chinese adjectives.(3)Nouns ofabstract meaning also can be transformed into adverbs in translation. Exploredtentatively the different possible causes for transformation:(1)Differences inclassification of parts of speech.(2) Corresponding in meaning but different in part ofspeech.This study would provide a reference for translation teaching and practice. Transformation, one of the commonly adopted translation techniques, is considered asan important part of the studies of translation strategy. Above all，adoption of thetechnique of transformation is directly aimed at achieving the maximal expressiveness.
