Chinese character recognition is a kind of special model identification. this is a process which includes the identification of graphics, phonology and the access of the meaning of Chinese character. In recent years, the technique and method of modern cognitive psychology have maintained fast growing. Scholars have studied on the mental process of Chinese character recognition in a meticulous and deepgoing way. In this paper, we firstly reviewed the current related research situation on Chinese character recognition and summarized the previous researches and improved experimental design. This study used three priming-category judgement tasks which were based individually on the graphic, phonological and semantic information. Southeast Asia students’time course of graphic, phonological and semantic activation in Chinese character recognition was investigated with different types of SOA. The paper tried to provide a valid empirical research to guide Chinese teaching as a second language. The results indicate as follow:(1) Generally speaking, the path of Southeast Asia students’Chinese character recognition accords with the straight hypothesis, that is to say, the meaning of Chinese character can be accessed directly by the activation of graphic information. Phonology is not very important.(2) Southeast Asia students’Chinese character recognition depends on the tasks that we have used. In details, the semantic task is completed quickest and best, the phonological task the slowest, the graphic task the worst.(3) With the development of the Chinese proficiency, Southeast Asia students whose levels from middle to higher may have poor performance in Chinese character recognition, because both the native language’s characteristcs of cognitive process and Chinese language’s characteristcs of cognitive process are equally matched.
