The Chinese character recognition is a special process of pattern recognition. It refers to the cognitive process of getting the Chinese character features by a series of information processing on the visual stimulation from the Chinese characters, including the recognition of Chinese character pattern, character pronunciation and word meaning, but explores more the recognition of Chinese character pattern. In recent years, with the rise of cognitive psychology, the psychologists have conducted extensive research on the problem of Chinese character recognition and accumulated a wealth of theoretical results. In the paper, we firstly reviewed the current related research on cognitive style and Chinese character recognition at home and abroad and summarized the previous researches and improved experimental design. The study divided the cognitive style into the Whole-Analysis dimension and Verbal-Imagery dimension to explore the effects of different cognitive styles of the Southeast Asian students on the Chinese character recognition by the true and false word judgment task. The paper tried to provide a valid empirical research to guide Chinese teaching as a second language. The results indicated as follows:1. The cognitive styles had effects on the Chinese character recognition of the Southeast Asian students. The students of wholist cognitive style recognized the Chinese character more quickly than the students of analytic cognitive style, and the students of imagery cognitive style recognized the Chinese character more quickly than the students of verbal cognitive style. The students of wholist-imagery cognitive style recognized the Chinese character more quickly than the students of wholist-verbal cognitive style, the students of wholist-verbal cognitive style recognized the Chinese character more quickly than the students of analytic-imagery cognitive style, the students of analytic-imagery cognitive style recognized the Chinese character more quickly than the students of analytic-verbal cognitive style.2. The stroke numbers had effects on the Chinese character recognition of the Southeast Asian students. The Chinese character recognition of less stroke number was faster than the Chinese character recognition of more stroke number. 3. The word frequency had effects on the Chinese character recognition of the Southeast Asian students. The Chinese character recognition of high word frequency was faster than the Chinese character recognition of low word frequency.4. The cognitive styles had effects on the basic unit of the Southeast Asian students’ Chinese character recognition. The students of different cognitive styles had different basic unit in the process of Chinese character recognition. The students of wholist cognitive style and imagery cognitive style tend to the whole word processing, and the students of analytic cognitive style and verbal cognitive style tend to the characteristics analysis processing.
