During political diplomatic activities, diplomatic spokespersons, on the one hand, can improve the effectiveness of the communication by skillfully using vague language, which maybe trigger an excellent effect. On the other hand, interpreters enhance qualities of the task by technically using vague language as one of tactics. A successful political diplomacy is a result from the concerted effort made by spokesperson and interpreter. This thesis explores the functions and characteristics of vague language, and takes vague language as a tactic of successful interpretation. Under the framework of the Cooperation Principle, this thesis studies vague language from two sides---spokesperson and interpreter, and demonstrates how vague language is applied when it complies with the Cooperation Principle or violates Cooperation Principle. Moreover, the Principle of Politeness and "Face threats" theory has been involved in the paper to give a further analysis on functions of vague language in political diplomatic activities. The thesis compares and analyzes the different roles played by spokespersons and interpreters and offers the methods and tactics for them. The author hopes these methods and tactics helpful in improving their capabilities of communications and translation quality. All the materials in the thesis are brought from practice. The author tries to analyze the vague language from the perspective of the MTI, which lays a solid foundation for the future practice.
